A Chase board part-way through a game: coloured road tiles, black and white pawns, and stacks of gold

Five things you can do. Pick one, each turn.

The object of the game is to jump, sweep and block your opponent and collect debts so that their pawns have no legal moves left. No pawn is ever taken off the board; the gold moves instead, and a player who owes more than they hold has lost.

Game Highlights

Every game gets a list of its turning points: the moves where the lead changed hands, and what the gold was after each one.

Press one and the replay jumps straight to it. You don't have to mark anything up. It works this out on its own.

The Game Crystal

Every game you finish becomes an object. Turn it over, look through it, and see the whole shape of what happened in one go.

This one is real: eighty-five turns. Drag it around. Click any element of the crystal and the board opens at that moment.

Replay, with a link

Watch any game again, as fast or as slow as you like. Send the link to anyone and it just opens. They don't need an account and it plays right in their browser instantly.

Fork it

Found the move that lost it? Stop there and play it out again the other way, against the computer or a friend.

Three ways to play

Classic (next tile), Tile Drafting (pick from the next three tiles), and Inception (the tiles you used to jump an opponent change direction when you land). Same rules, three different modes.

The Grit rating

Your win rate, mostly, plus credit for the games you won from behind. Leading the whole way earns you nothing extra, but showing true grit in your gameplay does.

What the game teaches about life

Competition

Fair competition is the highest form of cooperation. Something that helps your opponent may also be what helps you.

Possibilities

Each situation in life is full of possibilities. But those possibilities are wasted if you don't navigate your life to make changes happen.

Karma

If you do something to harm others, it could just as easily work against you.

Balance

Find a balance between saving and spending. Don't put all your eggs in one basket, including the savings basket.

Change

Life can change suddenly, and in unexpected ways. Make reasonable choices and assume surprises are for the best.

Solutions

Every problem has a solution, though you never really know what it is until you try.

Cost

Each choice you make has both a cost and a benefit. When people experience the cost of their actions directly rather than just the benefits, they make different choices.

Nuance

Life is filled with nuance. Although something may appear to be one or the other on the surface, the reality goes much deeper.

Defence

Just because someone attacks you it does not mean you have lost. Sometimes surviving means defending yourself.

Invented by a 5 year-old girl

One day, a 5 year-old girl invented a game while playing with ducks in the shower. The ducks rode along the tiles, and the grout lines between them were roads — some open, some blocked. After some months, her father realized the game could be played on a chess board. She chose the colours, added the jumping element, asked for cut-out squares with roads printed on them so you could see which way a piece could go, and shaped many of the rules that are still in it today.
